(FROM OCR SFECIAL CORRESPONDENTS.) MASTERTON. HOSPITAL TRUSTEES' MEETING. Tho monthly meeting of the Trustees of the Masterton Hospital was hold yesterday morning. There wero present:—Messrs. J. B. Keith, J. C. Ewington, W. Fisher, H. J. O'Leary, R. Harris, M. J. Jackson, F. W. H. Kummor, and J. C. Boddington (secretary). Mr. Keith presided. Tho following report by tho treasurer was read and adopted:—Credit balance July 15, £11 10s. 4d.; receipts, £271 19s. lOd.; expenditure, £281 13s. 3d. Tho' credit balance at date is £1 16s. lid., plus an outstanding cheque £7 195., making a bank balance of £9 6s. lid. . Accounts amounting to £138 19s. Bd. were passed for payment. The diary showed that at tho last meeting thero were in tho Hospital 23 patients. Since that date 29 patients had been admitted and 32 discharged, leaving 25 in tho institution. The fever hospital contains sis patients of tho last-mentioned number. A report by a committee consisting of the Chairman and Messrs. 11. Brown and Harris, set un to consider matters in connection with the fever ward, was adootcd. With the' concurrence of the Chairman of the District Board, it has been arranged to purchase for £25 the outbuilding at- the old hospital known as the laundry and wardsman's quarters, which is to bo renovated and fitted up at a cost of £8 10s. The secretary reported having summoned several ex-patients for payment of their accounts, and stated that tho cases had either been settled out of Court or judgment had been consented to and substantial reductions .of the indebtedness had been made. Other defaulters are being proceeded against. ' Mr. R. Brown was not present to move his motion, of which ho had given notice, that meetings of the Trustees be held in some place other than the hospital during tho winter months, or till such timo as tho Trustees shall deem desirable. Mr; Fisher moved tho motion, which was carried. • Tho'acting borough engineer wrote stating that he was satisfied tlmt the hospital's water meter was working correctly, and that no pipe was leaking. Mr. J. M. Coradino forwarded a report by Messrs. Jenkins and Mack on the drying-room, recommending improvements. It was resolved to communicate with the architects, Messrs.' Crichton and M'Kay, before taking further action. Several members of the staff had been ill and off duty during tho month, but had all now resumed' duty. The Chairman and Mr. Ewington.were appointed to investigate tho advisability of installing coke stoves in the laundry. The Chairman reported on the recent visit of< the Inspector-General of Hospitals, who had made various suggestions for the guidance of'the Trustees. The Chairman moved that the secretary confer with the matron and doctors with a view of revising the tariff. This was carried. Mr. Fishor moved that the doctors bo recomnrended not to admit patients for too slight esses. This was also carried. ■ 'flic Chairman and Mr. O'Leary were appointed visitors for tho month.
A Parliamentary party, which is to visit, the Wairarapa early next month, is to be entertained at Carterton on Monday, September 7. It is expected that amongst tho visitors will bo a Cabinet Minister. 1 The members of the Masterton Borough Council : on Tuesday night presented _ tho Mayor, Mr. P. L. Hollings,. with a silver cradle in minature, mounted on ebony and enclosed in' a glass-case, in honour of tho birth of a daughter to the Mayoral family, during his Worship's term of office. The Council also extended its congratulations to the Mayoress, Mrs. Hollings. This is the second' time in the municipal history of tht Wairarapa .that the mayor of one of tho boroughs has received a silver cradle, presentation, the first recipient being Mr. A. C. Bjcknell, Mayor of Greytown, in 1905. The Masterton Borough Council .overdraft on its general account now stands'at £7969 Bs. sd. The outstanding rates aro set down at £601 Is. Id. The Council has entered into., an arrangement with its bank to bo allowed interest-at the rate of 3J per cent, on the balance of unexpended loan accounts if tho same were put on fixed deposit for twelve months, and on tho further understanding that any sums expended out of these accounts would bovcharged. as overdrafts at tho rato of 5 per'cent. ; At tho meeting of the Management Committee of . the Wairarapa Swimming Club, the strongest inland organisation of its kind in-tho Dominion, it was decided to hold tlio annual carnival on January 22. .It was reported that since last season-the membership had increased 100 per cent. The Masterton Borough Council has decided to allow no further permits in the Borough-for the'construction of private septic tanks. It is generally ' understood that the \ private septic tank system - is, more or less. a. failure, possibly. becausie it never! receives the' proper attention. ' With a third of tho houses in a the town with no drainage system, and septic tanks, 'which aro in many cases fever-breeding receptacles of,tho icorst description, tho Council appears to be acting wisely, in the interests of tho health of, the population, in refusing to permit the 'further extension or. a drainage system, which, under, private supervision, has been .fojiud in most instances to be insanitary to a dejgree.
PAHIATUA. An, interesting match was shot off at Mr. Georgo Oxley's paddock yesterday afternoon. Although the weather was gusty and'occasionally showery good shooting was made. Robottom and Tanner tied for the Storey trophy with 19 kills out of 21 birds. W. M'Cardle with 18 out of 21 was third."ln tho . shoot i off, (first.. t miss out) ; Robottom secured tho ; trophy'/ Tanner : and ■ M'Cardle taking, cash prizes. Robottom also secured his second leg-in for. tho Mitchell trophy.' A' Scarborough Saturday team played a Pahiatua Wednesday team here, tho 'latter winning after a. good gaino by.two tries to a penalty goal. Walsh and Peters scored the tries for the Wednesday.'team,-..Horton kicking the goal for the Saturday team. ' CARTERTON. At the Fire Brigade meeting on "Tuesday night, Captain Lumley announced his intention of resigning owing to his departure from the district. Captain Lumley has been in command of tho brigade for the past ten years, and, apart from this, will be much missed. WOODYILLE. The local Foresters Court invited, the Pahiatua Court members over for a social ovoning on their last lodge night, and a good number of visiting brethren attended. Several townsfolk were also invited to help provido the programme for the visitors. A very pleasant evening was spent and sis new members wero initiated. - An attempt is being made to form a riflo club. Mr. C. Balcombo has the matter in hand. . Tho railway employees havo formed themselves into a society whereby they agreo to deal with certain storekeepers at certain rates of discount. FEATHEIISTON. Messrs. Bockett Bros., of Western Lake, who havo sold their dairy herd, intend going in for sheep farming -on a more extensivo scalo. Tho trees in Fitzhcrbort Street aro being lopped and trimmed, making a niucU-nccded improvement in their appearance. Mr. Jack Hireson, who has just returned from a trip to the Old Country, is spending a holiday with friends hero. Cash registers have been placed inside each ontranco of a fashionable Roman Catholic Church at Worcester, Mass. Worshippers, instead of contributing to a collcction in tho ordinary way during the • sorvico, are expected to make their donations as they enter tho building, and to register the amount. Tho result is reported to bo omiiiontly satisfactory.
