DR. TUDOR JONES AND THE DOCTRINE OF THE ATONEMENT.
Sir, —In your report of Dr. ' Tudor Jones's sermon on "Jesus and tho- Christ ■ of J ■ the Cross" in your issue of to-day ho is reported as saying "That if anything made him believo in the' doctrine of reincarnation it would bo the revival of controversies of the 15th and 16th centuries in Now Zealand at tho present day amongst a largo section of tno Christian Church, Theories which were dead in all the seats of learning in tho old world- seemed to have come here to flourish." Those' words can only lead tho ordinary reader to suppose that thoso who hold the doctrino of atonement through Christ's expiatory sacrifice arc ignorant of presont-day thought. This is so absurdly inaccurate that all who know tho facts can only regard it with amusement. As showing how far this is from being true I mention tho names of a fow of the great leaders of modern theological scholarship in Britain who havo written 011 this subject, and . who tcach tho doctrino 'of redemption through tho expiatory sacrifice of. our Lord on the Cross. In Glasgow U.F. Hall the following four Professors aro among tho greatest • theologians living:— 'Drs. Lindsay, George Adam Smith, Orr, and Dennoy, and all four have avowod- their faith in this great truth. In Edinburgh, Dr. Marcus Dods and Dr. W. P. Paterson may be taken as representing tho Now College and tho Uriivorsity, and both havo taught this great truth. In Oxford, Profcsso.r Driver, may be taken as a representative man, and he has taught it. In London, Principals Forsyth and Garvio aro among tho best-known names, and thoy havo both taught it. Now, thoso aro only r selection of a few names of representative writers whose books I happen to havo'on mv shelves; but there arc 1101 ''greater scholars in Great Britain, and they represent tho seats of learning of the Angljcan; tho Presbyterian, and the. Congregational churches. They are sufficient to snow how inaccurate Dr. Tudor Joneß's statement
is. , And not only have they all taught tliitf great Christian truth, hut- several of them have written specially on it as of highest importanco for the life of to-day.—l • am, ■etc., ... ' ISAAC JOLLY. Palmorston North, August 17.
