Tlio return trip of tho Parliamentary train was not as enjoyable as its first journey had been, for heavy rain fell and tho passengers for the most part remained in their own carriages and were not tempted out when tho train stopped at various stations, so that ; many- of those at ono end of tho train did not know who wero passongers at tho other. The refreshment car divided tho train into northern and southern territory. It is reported that tho most charming of all tho passengers was one who came on board at Taumarunui, and who was also the youngest of all, and though ho reckoned his ago by months instead of years ho preserved a perfectly sereno demeanour throughout, tho journey. Among tho many lady passengers were Lady Ward and Miss Eileen Ward, Mrs. Findlay, Mrs. Chapplo and two daughters,' Mrs. Barber and two daughters, Mrs. Louisson and Miss Louisson, Mcsdamcs K.. Macdonald, Mason, Arnold, Wood, Carncross, Hogg, Field, Rhodes, Johnston, Spragg, Bothamlcy, Geddes, Dinnio, Berry, Chas. Wilson, B. Wilson, Palmer, I'oss, and Misses Massey, Lethbridge, Seddon,. and Platts. ■ It was a very cnjoyablo afternoon tea'that was given yesterday by Mrs.' von. Haast in honour of' Mr. Merton, tho young. Christchurch artist who is at present her guest. The various rooms where tho guests wero entertained were decorated with masses of tho most beautiful yellow primroses and other spring flowers. Mr. Morton is an oxcellent musician, and during tho afternoon both he and Mr. yon Haast played, and Mr. Robinson and Mr. von Haast sang several songs. Mrs. von Ilaast wore a white muslin frock trimmed with much handsome white lace. Among the guests were Mrs. and Miss Quick, Mrs. and Miss Burnett, Mrs. and tho Misses'Richmond,'-Dr. Agnes Bennett, Mesdames Salmond, Kendall, Hogben, RankineBrown, Picken, ■ Harcourt, Young, Stott, .Smith, Atkinson, D'Oyley, Crosby, and tho Misses Turner, Hursthouse, and Dean, Dr. Kendall,; and Messrs. Herdman, Robinson,' and Joynt. , ' ,Miss- Rosina Buckmann leaves to-day via the South for Melbourne, where she is to join the Musgrove Opera Company. Mrs. Captain Stewart who has been suffering from an acute attack'of appendicitis is now improving, in:health.' Mrs. Stewart's sister, Miss Aarons' (Boivral, New South Wales), arrived by last week's Sydney boat on a visit to her. Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Kersley of Wellington, after spending-some time'in London in connection with business matters, have been visiting Scotland, and when the last mail left were seeing the sights of Edinburgh in company with Mr. and Mrs. W. Allan, of this. city. Mrs. St.. John Buckley,'of Oamaru, arrived in Wellington, yesterday, and is staying at the. Grand Hotel. , Mr. and Mrs. Francis, of Waimato, aro staying at the Grand Hotel. Mr. and Mrs. Vallancc, who have beonto Christchurch for the race week, returned to Wellington, yesterday.. Invitations have been, issued ;for tho wedding of Miss. Elsie Joseph to Mr. Nathan, which is to; take place on Tuesday, September 15.' • ' The marriage of Miss. May Harding to Mr. Somerville will take place at Waipukurau on Wednesday, September 16.
