A man armed with a knifo attacked tho President of Peru in tho streets of Lima. Tho President defended himself from his would-bo assassin until tho police ran to bis assistance. - < ' The man then dropped his knife and succeeded in making good his escape. Senor Jose Pardo, President of Peru; was installed in office on September 21, As the term, is for four'years, he is Hearing its expiry. He was born on Fobnlary 21, ISG-1. ■ Tho Prcsident-elect Is Senor Loguia, who was elected without opposition in May. As his term of office does not begin till September, the cablegram can hardly refer to him. Evidence of the unpopularity in some quarters of President Pardo is afforded by tho unsuccessful revolution which took' place somo months ago It was roported in May that Durand, revolutionary leader, had been routed at Cerro do Pasco.'
At the end of that month the gaols of Peru were full of.political prisoners.
