! POLICE CASES. (Before Mr. W.'P. James, S.lt.) A YOUTHFUL VAGRANT. , A youth named Sydney 18 years of age, pleaded guilty to a charge of being an idle and disorderly person within'the meaning of the Police Offences Act 1884 in that he had insufficient lawful means of support. ! Sub-Inspector Phair informed tho Court that accused arrived in New Zealand from Sydney about two years ago and since his arrival had been employed' for some time on. various steamers. He left the Union Company steamer Pateena some months ago and went into the country where lie had been living with different Maoris. He returned to -Wellington several weeks ago and although he had been warned by the police, had per-' sisted in hanging about Chinese dens in Haining Street.
His Worship said it seemed a pity to send a young man like accused to gaol, but it was difficult to say >vhat was best to do with him as lie was too, old to. be sent to an Industrial School. Accused would bo sent to gaol for one month, and was warned.that if he did not mend his ways he ran a risk of ending his days in gaol. OBSCENE LANGUAGE. A young man named Ernest Hall appeared on remand on a charge of having used obscene language in Clyde Quay. Accused pleaded'guilty. His Worship said the language complained of was disgusting in the extremp arid offences of the kind must be put down. Accused would be convicted and sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment. MISCELLANEOUS. Thr.ee first offenders for drunkenness wore brought forward, each being convicted and fined os. with the alternative of 24 hours' imprisonment.
