Tho race meeting promoted by tho Fleet executive in honour of the visiting squadron took place at Ellerslie to-day in beautiful weather, aud was attended by an immense concourse of visitors to the city and officers and men of the American warships. His Excellency tho Governor, Lady Plunket, and tho Hon. Kathleen Plunket, attended by their suite, were present on the course, as were also Admiral Sperry and his brother Admirajs, and Admiral Poore, tho distinguished visitors being received by the Club officials. Some good racing was witnessed, and everything went with a good swing. The results are as follow:—
WELCOME HURDLE HANDICAP. One mile and a half. Mr. Thackwaite's br. g. Ataraoa, 9st. 61b (Flynn) 1 Mr. E. S. Pettit's b. g. Poplar, 9st. 121b. (Wilson) 2 Mr. J. M'Nicol's b. g. Uranium and Tui Cakobau raced away in front, followed by Leonator and Aristocrat. The positions were unchanged in the run along the hack stretch. Tho leading pair ivero done with as the field ran across the top,* and Leonator, Tui Cakobau, and To Aroha camo into the straight together in command. When they settled to their work tho latter was running in second place, followed by Azoff and Escamillo.. Dogger Bank still had chargc when they turned for home, and easily held his own in tho run to tho post, finishing up a winner by three lengths from Cadenco, who lasted long, enough to boat Escamillo by half a length for.second place. Hautapu was early in tho lead, and when tho water was reached lie ■ was snowing tho way half a dozen lengths-in front of Crcusot, and then came Dolores. Along tho back Creusot was within two lengths of Hautapu. Tliero was no chango in tho position as they ascended the hill the first time. At tho fence at the top of tho hill the order was: Hautapu, Creusot, Dolores, and Pipi. Dolores fell at tho sod wall, and when tho doublo was reached Hautapu was in front, followed by Cinque and Creusot together. Tho pair raced in company to the old water jump, where Cinquo lost her rider, who, however, remounted. ' This left Creusot in tho lead two lengths in front of Hautapu, and then came Pipi and Sol. Ascending the hill for tho last time, Creusot showed tho way. Pipi took charge at the top of tho hill, but in the descent Creusot' was in front again with Sol at tho head of tho others. Creusot fell at tho sod wall, leaving Pipi in charge. Sol put in his claim at this stage, and, heading tho leader at tho last fence, won by two lengths from Pipi.
