A MAORI WAR ANNIVERSARY.
PROPOSED TARANAKI CELEBRATION,
It is over forty years.since the now thicklypopulated dairy country of Tarauaki was onco tho field of battle in bloody contests between the Pakeha.and Maori. Thero were many desperate struggles, but tho most noteworthy were the fights at To Ngutu-o-te-Manu. The first attack on Te Ngutu-o-te-Manu took place-on' October 21, 1868," and 'it'was not until September 7 that the celebrated battlo was fought when Major Von Tempsky was killed, together with a number of his soldiers. It is intended to hold a memorial service at the To Ngutu-o-te-Manu reservo on Sunday, August' 23, at 1.30 o'clock, in honour of'the bravo Major and those of his followers who fell with him. _ Tho volunteer corps throughr out the _ district, namely, Hawera, Manaia, and iOpiinake, together with' tho various bands at these places and Kaponga, will take part, when the troops will parade and the bands render sacred music. It is interesting to record that Mr. John Flynn and Sir. James Livingston, two well-known and highly-respected settlers of the district,' who took part ,in the historic, occurrence, are tho only* two persons (as far'as is known) living in Hawera to-day out of the number who participated in the battlo. Mr. Flynn, in conversation with a "Star" representative, said on' that fatal morning (September 7) that of 400 or 500 men who were sent out from Waihi 44 were wounded and killed. Mr. Flynn, who was among those wounded, recollected seeing Von Tempsky fall.— "Taranaki Daily News."
