PROFITS, OF THE MILK INDUSTRY.
A Taratahi dairy farmer who has made a modest forttme at the' business of - milk' pro-' duction'informed our Wairarapa 'correspondent that he thought that £17 per cow per annum-was too low an estimate of the'gross return' which dairy- farmers should 'receive who railed their milk away for the Wellington city trade. In a herd-of sixty cows his gross return from butter fat supplied'to tho Taratahi Factory was £13 10s. per cow per annum, and he thought there should bo a much'larger margin of profit obtained by consigning to Wellington than was stated. This may be so, but £17' per cow seems to be a fair averago. A case was brought : under the notice of our correspondent where tho return for supplies to Wellington was only £10 per cow, and between tho loss sustained in that direction, and a:, high'rental, the dairyman was forced; out of the business altogether. Tho demand for milk from the Wairarapa for Wellington consumption is on ithe increase, however,-and is certain to affect the price of dairy land to an appreciable degree in the courso-o'f a few years.
