In an interesting address on Juno 29 at the Commemoration Day proceedings of Livingstone College, Leyton, Sir Patrick Mauson, F.R.S., reviewed-.the progress made ,in the knowledge of tropical medicine during tho last thirty years. Sir Patrick mentioned in review a large number of tropical diseases, such as malaria, plague, sleeping sickness, and the like. Speaking of beri-beri, he mado the important announcement that ho had received a letter from a friend intimating that he thought the way in which this disease could be recognised had been demonstrated. Ho was not at liberty to describe the facts, hut tho conclusions, if correct,, indicated that another disease could be prevented arid cured. (Cheers.) ' .' ' ' Livingstone Collego, as its Principal, Dr. Harford, had pointed out, exists to give missionaries a certain amount of medical training, and its. work was highly commended by Sir Patrick Manson and also by the Bishoy of St. Albans and' Bishop' Molony, of Mid-China, who was formerly a student of tho college.
