Tho engagement has recently been announced of Miss M. Messenger, daughter of Colonel Messenger of New Plymouth, to Mr. Somerset Smith, formerly of Wellington but now living in Now Plymouth.

In tho golf competitions played off on Tuesday. afternoon at the Hutt Links Miss Hayward camo first in the Hutt Club, with Miss Fostor second; :whilo Miss Freeth was first in the Trentham Club competition witji Miss Fulton second.' - •

: Mrs. John -Bidwill, Miss Bidwill, Miss Marchant, -principal of tho. Girls' College'.in Dunedin, and her sister Miss Marchnnt, of Wellington, aro leaving to-morrow 'by the Ulimaroa for Sydney on pleasure bent. They expect to bo away for a mouth at least, and will be in Sydney whon tho American Fleet arrives there. Afterwards they intend to go into tho country on a visit.

Mrs. John Barton of Trentham also goes by the Ulimaroa to'Sydnoy. ,

Miss Bright, who is now teaching at the Wallaccviilo School, is the authoress of "Threo Christmas Gifts," a book of New Zealand fairy tales that has been most favourably reviewed by "Tlio Times" and other leading Homo papers. Miss Bright hopes soon to be at work on a novel of Now Zealand life. •'

Yesterday afternoon tho marriage of Miss Mary L. Jones, second daughter of Mr. John Jones of Boulcott Street to Mr. William H. Hill took place at the -residence of Mr. and Mrs.. Jones, the Rev. J. Gibson Smith performing tho ceremony. The bridesmaids were Misses Adela and Ruby Jones. A reception'was held aftor tho ceremony. Among the presents was a silver tea service from Messrs. Wakeliri and Sons with which firm the bridegroom is connected.

Miss Dulcie • Deamer, of Feathorston, who lias earned a place in tho Australian world of letters, leaves for Sydney by tho Ulimaroa to-morrow on her way to India.

Mr. James Nevin Tait,. of the firm of Messrs:' J. and N. Tait, tho well known theatrical firm,' was married in London recently to Miss Bess Norris, the young Australian painter who has won such fame as a miniaturist in recent'years. This artist has exhibited at the Royal Academy with success on several occasions, and her namo was included in the list cabled out this year.

To-night, in the Opera House, Miss E. Beero is bringing out her pupils in a. charming ballet entitled "May Day." A largo number of little boys and girls, nearly a hundred, aro taking part in the performance, and somo quaint and picturesque dances havo been arranged, particularly that of the Morris dance, brought down from the days of Robin Hood, and danced with staves and jingling bells. During the second part of, the programme songs will be sung bjv leading singers, and miscellaneous dances will be given. Altogether, a delightful evening' 3 entertainment is to be looked forward to. ■

Mr. Charles Speak and Miss Lottio Carmont wero married hire -on Tuesday (writes our Otaki correspondent),, and Mr. Alex. M'Cleland and Miss Annie Woods yesterday morning. The young couples have been in the district for somo timo, and are well known. Both weddings wero of a very quiet character.

; On Tuesday evening the members ,of tho Kiwi Hockey Club entertained their friends at a danco in tho Masonic Hall in Boiilcott Street. Tho supper table was prettily arranged,,, with spring flowers, and streamers'of bluo 'and gold were suspended from tho lights above tho table to tho different corners.
