WOMEN'S EMPLOYMENT BUREAU.
: REPORT FOR LAST MONTH. .The following report from tho Government Women's Employment . Bureau has come to hand and gives . somo interesting- information about women's work :— Wellington.—An increased number of women was assisted during July than over the previous ]>eriod, Several hundred circulars na'vo been issued to-employers notifying them of tho establishment of tho office, and. this has resulted in a largely increased number of applications being received for. servants of all'classes. .'During the month the officer in charge has met two Home steamrs on arrival —i.e.,-the Arawa and tho Rimutaka—and has interviewed .the; ; womenfolk on board- and given them full ; information as to the best means; of.: securing employment. ! Most of the passengers, concerned had engagements to go. to, , but .several/havemade use-of tho office advico and . help. : Several girls following factory occupations,' such as dressmakers, .woollen-mill hands,' etc., and lady clerks. and. shop-assistants have been : assisted by/letters, of introduction to various', employers, and no difficulty has . been experienced in securing employment for these applicants,. There appear to be a good many hotel-servants out of employment just now, . and a very good class is offering. All classes of domestics for. .privato houses are scarce. Applications for the ■ following domestics and others 'wero received during the month: Twenty-nine housemaids, 13 waitresses, •12 generals,vlO-cooks, 7 lady-helps, 3 children's nurses, 2ibarmaids; 2S charwomen, 3. dressmakers. (day-workers), _ 2 typists, 2 shopassistants.', ..The applications received from couritry.Triistreisses for servants aro numerous, , and aro;.incrcasing each week: although several .'places haive been satisfactorily filled, . it-has been found that.wages-in.the city.are . high'er/rand; tho girls prefer ~to remain in .. town. • Auckland—One hundred and three mis- ' trosses-/applied for 110 servants during the monthji and - out' of this number -54' places have been filled through the agency of tlio . Department. Generals seem to be most "in request. Companions, governesses, and milliners were -also •/inquired, for. -Ninetyfour applications were made by domestics for emplpyment. Applications — for work wero also, received from governesses, laundresses, milliners, and nnrses. Tho dearth of general'servants is still severely felt. . Christchurch.—A large number of applications for servants is on the books, arid girls,! applying' aro , suited , immediately. : ' General servants,. however, are, father hard I to ,get, also ..girls willing to accept positions -'in,itho country. Forty-seven servants wero .sent, to employment during tho period from June 20 to July 20. , •
amount of . business transacted during the past month shows a material advanco on'that of the previous period. A. large number, of employers liavo made in-, quiry, whilst a corresponding increase has taken place in the number of servants asking for assistance. Tho latter include a variety of' occupations, those most generally in. demand being generate, and tliey are the roost difficult to obtain.
