RECOGNITION OF LITERARY MERIT.
FEDERAL PARLIAMENT'S VOTE. ' Last sossion the Fodoral Parliament voted £•500 to bo placed in the hands of a committee for distribution to men of letters or their widows ' and families whore necessity might bo disclosed. The grant has, on tlio rcoommendation of that oomniitteo, been distributed among the followingln New South Wales: 'Charlotte ICondall, widow of Henry Clarence Kendall; Elizabeth Farrell, widow of Jalni Farrell; Henry Alexander Stuart, author of 'several volumes of verse and prose; Annie Kreft, widow of Gorhardt Kreft, author of valuable works of natural! history; throe orphan children of Frank Myers; William Astley, who. wroto under the name of Prioe Waning; tlio Rev, Hebur T. Tranmar, author of " Century of Tasmanian History." ■ Victoria: Mrs. Laurence Fyson, Charles Frederick Somerton (journalist). Queensland: John H. Nicholson (author), Mrs. Brunton Stephens, and Mrs. Traill, widow of Henry Traill, author of " The Queensland Colony." Western Australia: Georgo Matson, writer of proso and verse. Tasmania: Tho Rev. John Bufton, author of "Tasmanians in Transvaal," and other works.
