On Sunday morning the latest addition to the red funnel fleet, the cargo steamer Waitemata, arrived at Port Chalmers (says the. ■'•'Otago Daily Times")., . In addition ..to ■, the .-.'particulars which hare 1 already appeared concerning this .new"'\-essel,. it may bo;;.sai'd that her 'lino lines and sym-' metrical .appearance, make the'vessel look smaller than she really is, as seon from tho. wharf, this impression being somewhat accentuated by her two short pole masts and somewhat shortlooking funnel, but'a closer inspection reveals Jier to bo.'Wfine big, vessel,, embodying ; dll the latest appliance's ana improvements -vVhieli.'now-' adays go towards the making of an up-to-dato cargo vessel. Her great beam—s4ft.—leaves ample 'deck-room on either side of licr cargo hatches, and in this respect the Waitemata differs, widely .from the average, cargo vessel, which in most instances lias. very little left to walk'-about on when the "hatches are Vail open.
Another feature of tho newcomer is the fact that her decks are of teak, instead of iron. 'As most cargo.- steamers : have iron decks,, her icrew .wiU doubtless appreciate the clean wooden decking if the Waitemata goes into the Cal-. cutta trade—a not unlikely proposition: 1 Another noticeable feature of the deck'equipment is tho length , of the; derrick supports,™which rise fully 20ft. above the deck lovel, and," being hollow, aro fitted' with • revolving cowls, and serve admirably as ventilators for tho holds, whilst their height-permits of a wide-radius for tlio cargo booms, with which each is fur-, nished, thus enabling cargo to be handled .with the greatest easo and" celerity, as the dorricks are placed on each side of the main hatches. This enables shorter booms to be employed than would be the case if they woro ajl dependent upon tho masts' for supoort. ■ The whole of tho machinery is placed right amidships, and_ embraces everything of the latest and best'in that line, her engines enabling the vessel to steam 11 knots per hour comfortably upon a-.very moderate coal consumntion. Being the latest of her type, it is almost superfluous to say that the quarters for tho officers and crew havo been designed on up-to-date principles, and are quite in'keeping with the general equipment of this fine steamer, which is declared to be one of the best vessels of her type afloat. ■> " * .
■ After loading at t.cst of England ports tho Waitemata loft London on May 3 for Frcmantle, and with tlio exception of thrco or four days of bad weather when nearing tho latter port, her maiden voyage has proved most uneventful from start to finish, whilst her machinery proved more than equal to all demands, and worked with • the utmost smoothness. Taken altogether, the Waitemata is a very fine vessel, and constitutes a worthy and notaoie addition to tho Union Company's fleet.
'• At Boven last night the 1 Union Company's' steamer Kaitiina left Wellington for Westport.■Yesterday the scow Whangaroa was placed on the Patent Slip, and the-Kaliu camo off., i The Union Company's steamer Kakanoa is to be docked' at Auckland on completing discharge' there. ' On Friday the Shaw, Savill liner Tokomaru is expected to leave Wellington for the Bluff to complete discharge. The steamer Blenheim, after having been dolaycd for several days at the port of Wairau, has now arrived at Wellington, Before leaving Port Chalmers for Sydney Heads the A. and A. liner Stephanotis had to sign on five.liremon to replaco deserters. The steamer Tainui was detained at Havolock on account of exceptionally low tides, due to' south-easterly weather and heavy frosts. Messrs. E. H. Barber and Company liavo about two and a half thousand tons of coal' coming to tlicm from Newcastle in the steamers Navarino and Koromiko. ' This morning the Union Company's steamer Mokoia leaves Dunedin for Sydney, via Wellington and Northern ports. She arrives and leaves Wellington on Friday. While at the Bluff tho -Union Company's steamer Waitemata loaded 14,000 bags of oats for Auckland. She is duo in Wellington towards tho end of this week. .'A Bluff crew in command of Captain Barbor proceeded to Auckland at the end of last week to bring down tho l'ore-and-aft schooner Gisborue, lately, purchased by tho Bluff Fishing Company. An exchange reports that tho steamer Aparimi, which left Calcutta'on July 31 for Now Zealand, via Singapore and Samarang, is oxSectcd to call at the four principal ports of the fominion, and to leave again for Calcutta at the end of September. Tho schooner Oui Oui, built to tho order of the Froiich New Hebrides Company, sailed from Ciotat at tho end of Juno for Noumea, and will niako tho voyaga via tho Suez Canal. Tho Oui ,Oui is provisioned for six months, and will .complete the journey without calling en route. Sho is fitted with an oil engine, but will cover almost tho entire distanco under canvas. The schooner's compauy numbers twelve all told.
