IN QUEEN STREET AT NIGHT.
WORK OF THE NAVAL POLICE. (Dr TELEGRAPH.—SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.)' Auckland, August 10, At a quarter past eleven Tiie Dominion representative coining from the banquet found Queen Street comparatively, quiet, though tho elovon and a half hours' leave of tho American sailors had still an hour and a quarter to run. Ho hailed a burly police constablo, and asked him how tho crowd had conducted itself during the evening. " Very well," was tho reply, "both sailors and shore people. There were a good few drunks, but there was no disorder worth mentioning. Thero were plenty of naval polico ashoro from tho Fleet, and as soon as one of their chaps got tho least bit obstreperous, or couldn't stand .on his feet, they pounced upon him like two or three cats on one mouse, and he just had t-o go. They don't stand any nonsense, and itj's a treat for us fellow's to watch them ; they carry handcuffs —and they're not afraid to use them. My word, if we civil police used cjvil oifendors as they use the Jack Tars tho crowd would nearly murder us."
