THE CITY BY NIGHT.
A SIGHT IN FAIRYLAND. _It was a sight in Fairyland to-night. The city itself, with the tower of Government Buildings outlined in electric lights, the mammoth "Welcome" blaring hospitality from e-rerj-wher©, and all the_streets aglitter with myriads of lights outlining the most prominent buildings and thoroughfares presented a rare spectacle, but the great vessels of the fleets outlined in lights outdid all the efforts of tho' city in the way of illumination. - With every spar and stack outlined in lights, their names blaring from the signs on their forward turrets, tho warships looked like a glimpse into some land controlled hy forces other than those of this material earth. Each vessel stood'out distinctly iji the water, which was as calm as a lake. Not-a wave disturbed tho surface of tho bay except those mads by tho small launches that darted in "and out of the circle of light around tho warships. Thousands thronged along the water front to so# the wonderful sight of the brightly illuminated ships and the displays of fireworks.
On land tho illumination was almost as brilliant. The public pfficcs outlined in olectrie lights presented a spectacle such as has seldom been seen in tho city. Queen Street, strung with -streamers of incandescont globes, was a blaco of light. Besides tho big arches at the street corners thero were festoons of lights all the way down tho streets on every block, and many business pcoplo had outlined their shops and offices in lights. Tens of thousands of pcoplo aro in tho streets. _ . 'From 8 o'clock until 8.30 tho battleships engaged in searchlight exercise. Two lights from every ship, and three and four from most of them, threw out great wido streamers of light that swept the bay and the sky, making a display that could be seen for. miles. Thero was no order in the searchlight exercise, .each vessel did as it pleased with its great eyes, and 1 some of tho time when the lights crossed each other thero was a blaze of whiteness that showed evory fold in the. olbuds and frightened birds to the cover of darkness. Over four thousand of tho American Jack Tars are ashore to-night. Tho Navy is itsolf policing the , town, the main streets being regularly patrolled.
