DRAINACE FOR KARORI.
Sir, —It is fully time that tho Karori Borough Council took the subject of drainage into consideration. The disgusting sights and smells which most a visitor every few hundred yards at any point in tho Borough, after passing tho site of tho old drinking fountain, amply warrant such a statement. Take, for instance,'one of the roads near tho Cemetery corner, branching off at right angles from tho main road. If tho sun does not get to work in the summer and put together a few nico little family cases of diphtheria down there, it will not bo for want of material. The main road itself is a caution to any councillor with his eyes open, but little lesson-giving spots like tlieso aro painted in pale blue-grey-green-brown all over tho place. And a blind man might easily guide himself about Karori by the variety of tho smells. There is a "hummer" on another side streot a few hundred yards .further <on.--
Hamilton, in the north, is flat, ajid therefore not. easily drained. Yet they have there an efficient septic tank system, which cost only £7000. I have no doubt that tho Mayor and Councillors of Karori aro as zealous for tho welfare of tho Borough as any other ratepayers, and that what they lie awalto about at nights is the cost of furnishing a sen-erago scheme which shall bo effective. They aro quito right to bo careful. Karori is pretty_ top-heavy already with the load of rates it is carrying, but surely, with a proposal to improve tho recreation ground and extend tho tramway, tho Borough Council should see an easy way out of the sewcrago question by calling upon the ratepayers to consent to an expenditure of £7001) only. ,Sewcrago and water togethor were, accounted ai littlo while ago to run the Borough into £.50,000, oh whoso authority I am unablo say. Let tho Council put its fears behind it, and, discarding tho • paralysing influenco of tho fifty, fall'tooth and nail on tho seven, aiid tear it into septic tanks. Let it be remembered again that Hamilton is flat, thereforo difficult to work witli a septic system.: Karori is hilly and easy.—l am, cto j '' MAIN CHANCE. 'August. 10.
