At a special meeting of tho Napier branch of the Hawke's Bay Educational Institute hold for tho purpose of discussing the provisions of tho Education Act Amendment Bill tho following resolutions were carried:—• That this branch of the Educational Institute heartily congratulates tho Minister for Education on the production of tho Bill; that a remit bo sent forward to, the Executive of tho Now Zealand Institute recommending them to urge tho Minister to modify tho measuro so as to securo from reduction tho salary of any teacher whoso school is reduced in grado until such teacher has had an opportunity of applying for and receiving a transfer.to a higher or equivalent position; that tho Minister bo asked to make provision so that teachers with 20 years' service, whose salaries arc less than £200 a year, and teachers with 15 years' service whose salaries aro less than £160, shall receive the maximum salary of their grado from January 1. 1909. Oaniaru, August 9. At a meeting of the North Otago Educational Institute on Saturday resolutions were passed thanking the Minister for Education for having introduced an Education Bill which in many respects is an improvement on former Bills, but expressing the opinion strongly that no Bijl can bo considered satisfactory which perpetuates payment of teachers' salaries on average attendance; also asking the Minister to make provision that teachers with ; twenty years' ser- . vice whose salaries are less than £200, and teachers with fifteen years' service whose salaries were less than £160, should receive tho maximum salary of ' their grade from January 1, 1909. ' "SEVERE EARTHQUAKE. Waipawa, August 8. A prolonged severe earthquake was • felt about 1.35 this morning. Napier, August 8. A rather severe earthquake was experienced at 1.30 this morning, the direction being south and east. Hastings, August 8. An eathquake lasting 20 seconds disturbed the town and .caused alarm at 1.30 this morning. No damage is reported. '' ARBITRATION COURT. Invarcargill, August 9. Several cases have been set down for hearing before the Arbitration Court on Ghiesday. ; Theso include about half a _ dozeu : alleged : breaches of awards, an application 'by the Sawmill Workers' Union for a nfew.' award, providing for increased wages," a'compensa-, tion case, and charges against A. M'Neilj -W. Lewis and Co., and Masters and ,Sons; that they not being occupiers of tailors' "workshops V nor employers of tailors did receive orders from customers for suite of clothes. MAN TAKES LAUDANUM. Wanganui, August 8. A case of supposed attempted suicide -occurred yesterday, a man named. Gunn, employed on the steamer Storm, taking laudanum. Treatment at the hospital proved successful, and the man was discharged from the institution this morning. He was then arrested on a'charge of having attempted to commit suicide.
MISSING. Napier, August 9. .There is no news of . the missing man Squire Wilson, who left his home some days ago, and was last seen on the road tc Awatoto.
