SUPPLY OF KEROSENE.
STANDARD OIL CO.'S METHODS.. (BI : TELEGRAPH.—SPECIAL COERESPOSDENT.) ! Auckland, August 8. Inquiries made locally by a "Herald" re-, porter elicited from wholesale houses the fact that the statements of Mr. T. M. Wilted, M.P., in Parliament as to the Standard Oil Company having "cornered" the supply of keroseno were by no means overdrawn. The position is that the Standard Oil Company hold a monopoly for the supply of kerosene which cannot be purchased elsewhere. . In consequence, although there is no duty upon the oil, it now costs Bs. Bd. per case, ex store, which i? considerably higher than when duty had to be paid. The average price is from 7s. Bd. to 7s. lid., but in Auckland at present tho first mentioned price has to be paid. There will- be no further supply of keroseno for about six weeks, when the prico to wholesale buyers will bo 7s. 6d. per case. A shortage of the commodity is reported in this city, which fact necessarily enables the Standard Oil Company to sustain high charges until tho next boat arrives with more. Buyers of kerosene in order to secure ..a bonus have, it appears, to sign a statement to the effect that they have not purchased the same from the makers of any other brand during a certain period. 1
