Flax-cutting started at Whitaunui on Saturday. Ono or two progressive local townspeople are endeavouring to ' get a now and largo clock erected in tho Post Office—something ill tho form of a town clock that can be seen at a distance. Should the clock eventuate it will not be before it is necessary.
A number, about 23, daii'y inspectors, .veterinary surgeons, and students from tho Veterinary Department arrived in Levin oil Friday to spend- a day on the local experimental farm. 'Most of these gentlemen have been studying in Wellington for the past month or two, and came up hero to get practical illustrations of a lot of the work they have been doing. As well, as inspecting all the stock, and various branches of the farm, exhibitions were given of milking cows by 'machinery, two"different makes of ,machine being in operation. Mr. Charley Dalil, •of Palmcrston North; gave an exhibition with tho Hartnett milker, and the LawrenceKennedy machine was also used. To show how effectively these machines worked three cows were brought in that had never been milked by machinery before, and it was quite remarkable how very soon tho cows seemed to settlo down to the new system of milking.
