SOCIAL 'AND PERSONAL.
Sir William and Lady Russell passed through Wellington on Saturday on tho way to the Races at lliccarton. Another of tho Cinderella dances, which aro so much enjoyed by those who go, takes placo near tho end of tho' month, at tho Hutt, Mr. and Mrs. Lowry, of Hawke's Bay, havo gone on to Christchurch for the Grand National week. Mrs. Didsbury and Miss Didsbury intend leaving for Auckland at tho end of tho week for a three of four weeks' visit. Miss Newall and her brother, Mr. S. Newall, leave for Sydney this week, en route for tho East. Miss Denniston has gone to Christchurch for tho Race week. On returning sho will visit Mrs Abraham at Palmerston North. Mr. and Mrs Cecil Cox, of Masterton, have been visiting Christchurch for two or three weeks. A very enjoyable ball, given by the Mounted Rifles, was held in tho Masterton Town and Drill Halls on Friday night. Tho hall where tho dancing took placo was most elaborately dcooratecl with flags ; of many nationalities, foliage and tho accoutrements of war, and with tho bright uniforms of the volunteers and tho. pretty colours of the frocks worn, was transformed from its usual sombrencss into a scene *of vivid colouring. The stage of tho Town Hall was turned into a supper room', 'and tho auditorium furnished as a drawing-room. Visitors from all parts of the district were present, and tho arrangements for the pleasure of tho guests were most carefully thought out. Tho ladies' committee consisted of the Mesdames J. M. Coradine, W. J. Hirschberg,' Arnot, Cook, E. A. Collier, G. Y. Dennis, J. Welch, Piatt, Kendall, Coradine, B. Welch, and Whittaker, the Misses M'Killop, M. Bunny, R. M'Lachlan, E. Igguldon, Hood, and Thomas, with Mr. A. C. Williams as secretary. Tho music was supplied by Mr. Reihana Boyes's string band. Lady Stout is giving an afternoon tea at tho Kelburne Kiosk. on Tuesday afternoon. Sirs. A. Crawford gave a small bridgo party on Friday night. Tho diamond jubilee of the wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Jabcz Chapman will bo held to-day at Mr. G. Pethorick's residence, Ingestre Street. They came out to New Zealand 32 years ago, and made their home in Johnsonville, .whero they havo resided ever since. Mr. Chapman and his sons have taken an important part in staging the destinies of tho township. The vessel they came out in was the' barque Carnatic, which took seven months td accomplish tho journey. They arrived at the Lyttolton Heads in safety, but rough weather drove them to sea for another month. Both Mr. and Mrs. Chapman aro halo and hearty, and of the family, live sons and two daughters are living. Thoro aro forty grandchildren and eight great-grand-children.
