Slow Tom having failed to ' survive the acceptance, none of tlie candidates ougaged in. tho Grand National Steeplechase have previously won the event, though several havo started in previous contests. P.' Johnson, who rides Kiatere in the big cross-country event to-morrow, has previously .won tho Grand National on Dummy, and J. Hall, who rides Nadador, steered Eclair to victory in last, year's race. Tho Vanguard mare Valima was taken south, by the Alararoa on Saturday night, arid will bo a starter ill the Enneld Steeples to-morroff. Mr. J. Monk informed mo during the week that Diabolo and Gipsy Belle will both bo ready for racing in the early spring. Neither, of tho pair is entered at the Hawke's- Bay meeting, but Diabolo will contost tho Wanganui Guineas. Tho two-year-old by Stopniak—Miss Dalryinple will probably make its . first appearance ill tho Wellesley Stakes at Trentham. "Mr. S. Messena is sending the three broad mares Waipaku, , Marionette, and Lady Isabel to the Waikanae Stud,- tho first week in September. T. Pine. will ride Black Reynard in the Grand National Hurdles next Thursday. Jockeys C. Jenkins and C. On the same day the salo of tho' lato Mr. Stead's horses takes place in Christchurch. Private advices 'from Riccarton state that Lingerer is doing satisfactory work on the tracks." Ghoorka declined his. engagements in the Grand National Steeplechase and the Jumpers' Flat and will be 1 started in tho Trial Hurdles to-morrow afternoon. ' The Caulfield Grand National Steeplechase has never been won; by the-same horse twice. By winning last year and running second this year (tho event is now called the Australian Steeplechase) Bribery has been the nearest to a doublo victory in the raco. . As , stated in Saturday's paper Skirving is . a New Zealander, who crossed to the Commonwealth a'..few years back. Nigel won a steeplechase at Mooneo Valley last month and .is the same Nigel, wliich gave ;C. O'Neill a bad fall at Mooneo Valley ago.

Going out of the-straight the third timo, Mercury headed Alloy Sloper, but fell back. At M'Donald's Nigel, Bribery, and No Trouble were close on Alloy Sloper. ■ At tho far turn, Nigel went up, with Bribery coming fast. Nigel led into tho straight by ten lengths from Bribery, arid came on full of running, winning by ton lengths in 7min. 59} sec. Tho Cardinal broke down, came last, and had to bo shot. ,
