SPAYED COWS.
AN INTERESTING SUBJECT. I .saw a nice lot of spayed'cows (says our travelling correspondent) leaving _ Mr. G. Humo's place at Kahautcra, looking very well indeed. On theso pastures cattlo soon put on a lot of condition. ' The spaving of cows is attracting increased attention just now. It was mentioned lately as one of tho advantages of the recent engagement of a farmers' veterinarian in Taranaki that the farmers would bo able to get their cows spayed. For tho bonefit of Beginners it may bo explained that tho spaying. (or unsexmg) of cows is done for two purposes, —(1) to cause tho flush of milk to continue for several seasons without further, calving, and (2) to' enable tho farmer to' turn the culls out to fatten without fear of their getting in calf. It is specially recommended for aged or inferior cows from" which no further calves aro wanted. The spaying, if done soon after calving, is said to maintain the flush of the milk flow for a considerable period. The operation is usually performed through ;an opening cut in the flank, but it must bo done by a practised hand. If dairy farmers were _to spay all their worst cows after calving it would certainly tend to lesson tho number of inferior calves added to the herds of the future, and apparently increase for the present the milk yield of tho animals operated on.
