Mr. C. J. Roakes, M.R.C.V.S., Assistant Chief Veterinarian, who has been on a visit to England and the Continent, returned to Wellington yesterday by the Maheno.

Mr. A. L. Haslam, manager for Millars' West Australian Hardwoods Company in New Zealand, arrived back from a visit to Western Australia by tho Maheno yesterday. He was accompanied by. Mrs. Haslam (nee Miss Hannah, of Wellington).

The Rev. Father O'Sullivan, of Blenhoim, who lias been paying a brief visit to Australia, returned by the Maheno yesterday. Father O'Sullivan visited Sydney in 'consequence of the illness of his sister, who is & nun at the Monte' Sant Angelo Convent. North Sydney. " ' v

Mr. James Nevin Tait, of the firm of J. and N. Tait, entrepreneurs, was married in London last week to Miss Bess Norris, tho well-known Victorian artist who has an enviable reputation as a painter of miniatures. Tho bridegroom was last in New Zealand as manager of the Clara Butt-Kennerley Rumford tour.

The private interment of the' remains 'of the late .Hon. H. Foldwick V.D., M.L.C., took place at tho Karori Cemetery yesterday morning. The only persons present outside the deceased gentleman's family Were the Prime Minister, the Hon. l Dr. Findlay, M.L.C., and the Hon. R. A. Loughnan, M.L.C. The Rev. D. C. Bates officiated at the graveside. .

News lias been received at Wanganui of the deatli of Mr. Houlton Forlong, for fourteen years connected with missionary work at tho New Hebrides. Tho decoased. was connected with no particular denomination, but organised and managed his own charges. Mr: Forlong met his death, as the result of an explosion on: an>fail launch, on July 18. The deceased was the eldest son of Mr. Gordon Forlong, and brother of Messrs. H. G'. and P. G. Forlong, of Wanganui, and Mr. ,G. G. Forlong, of Maxwell..

Mr. F. W. Haybittle, writing from Birmingham, on June 25, states that he and the members of his family had' been detained in that city on account of the serious illness of Mrs. Haybittle. She had, however, pulled through splendidly, and by tho end of July would, he i hoped, be well enough to take a trip north.' When ho wrote, Mr. Haybittle,. accompanied by his daughters, was about to .leave on a cycle tour of the Lake district and Scotland, which would be some compensation for thoir long sojourn in smoky Birmingham. •••
