No additional light was thrown on the cause of. the ■ disappearance, of the steamer Orion while on a passage from Tasmania to Melbourne at the Marine Court inquiry, and although several startling allegations were made at the time she so mysteriously'.disappeared, none of them were substantiated, (says a Sydney exchange).' 'J?tie. inquiry lasted 6ome days, tuid although each of the witnesses were- subjected to an exhaustive examination no evidence that could-assist 1 in solving the mystery came out. \The allegations that tho vessel was improperly loaded were most carefully ; gone into, and although it was learned'that' her cargo was a particularly large , ono for a vessel of the size of the Orion, not one atom of ovidenco that she was overloaded was adducted. ■ Various' supposed' defects s in tho ■ vessel were also brought under notice, but when .they were investigated, matter's' .were just tho same as before, and consequently it is more; than probablo, that cxact cause'of tho mishap will never be heard of, and'tho fate of the ill-fated vessel will forever, remain wrapt in mystery. ■ v.

Small wonder then, ' that' the tramp is beginning to feel tho pinch severely. The' regular liner is.protectfd. from-competition ~by. rebates and agreements with the merchants, while the tramp ...has-no. such line of defence, and, finds it very difficult ; to retaliate., The I case-of Messrs;-; Mar.lay who tendered their steamer for a''cargo of sleepers for.Natal- somo twelve months.iigo, and secured' the' business,, only. to, find: that tho ' shippers had overlooked a contract they had with-the Cape steam .lines: to givo them tae offer of 'all rtlioir. malarial, will bo ,: remembered in this, connection: V Sailing ■ ships have ■ been driven off. by • the cutting . tactics • of tho - liner, and it would "appeai> that it - must become more and more difficult . for tho tramp to maintain itrfooting in'thoso quarters hitherto .iijjmune.froni-tlio atta'clis of-the berth steamer.
