Jing, was shot .'at close range by his mate, Louie Yang, and seriously wounded, little hope of his recovery being entertained. Louie Yang has escaped. • SUPREME COURT SITTINGS. Aucklandi August 5. Prisoners sent from tho Lower Court- were sentenced.at the Supremo Court to-day as follows:—Robert Grant Gilbort, theft and breaking and two years' imprisonment on each of three counts, to be concurrent. Daniel O'Keefey theft from a dwelling, one year's imprisonment. Henry Walter Allen, forging a certificate to obtain employment on the railway, probation for two years. Percy M'Millan, breaking, entering, and theft, two years. Alfred Harris, theft, one year. Alexander James Stewart, a man with a bad record, up for falso pretences, two years' imprisonment on eaoh of seven charges, to.be concurrent. William Green, false, pre-' tences,. one year. Walter Davis Scott, falsa pretences, eighteen months. ' KENNEL CLUB SHOW. : Napier, August 5. The Kennel Club's show opened to-day under mopt unfavourable conditions, the weather being atrocious. Owing to the Northern boat being late, tho judge (Mr. J. A. Maude, of Sydney) will; be unable to reach Napier, till to-night's ■ express. The show is a good one, _ including dogs from all ; parts of the Dominion. • ~ LOCAL INDUSTRIES EXHIBITION. "■ Auckland, August 5. The local Industries Exhibition was opened to-day. Tho display is a fine one and includes examples of every industry carried on in the Dominion. EXCHANGE OP TEACHERS. Christchurch,, August ■ It; was reported at the meeting'of the Education Board this morning that a letter had been received from the Education; Department to the effect that no arrangements had been made by which teachers'in Eng-, •land and New Zealand could exchange places for. a time; and that it appeared very doubtful whether ideas ; of the kind' were to any extent practicable; ' • ■ . ; LICENSED VICTUALLERS AND LABOUB. • Auckiand] , August 5., At a meeting 'of the executive of tho . Auckland Licensed.! TIMBER-,TRADE. ! i'H Dunedln, August 5,; Tie Otago Sawmillers' Uniou of Operatives, has passed a resolution requesting the Government 'to increase the duty on all foreign and Australian timber to 6s. per 100 feet for all sizes less than 12 x 3 x 2, and to leave the present duty on all above that size; also that the Government be asked to impose an oxport duty of 4s; per 100 feet on all kauri exported. ; ■
DEATH OF A VETERAN. . Auckland,. Augnst 5. Mr. Daniel Theobold, one of the oldest residents of Auckland, died in the Veterans' Home to-day, aged eighty-seveu. : He served in the 70£h Eggiment through the Indian Mutiny and Maori Wais, 'and was _ at the taking'' of' Waitara' Pa- in Taranaki.'- He held the Indian Mutiny: medal,'the New Zea- : land medal,' the •Imperial long service,' and other medals. ' . SUICIDE. . j , (■" Napier, August s. >Martha Milgrew, .a. widow residing in White Road, committed suicide by hanging • herself, early this morning. Deceased's husband died some years ago, and she had maintained herself, by cleaning offices and .other work. She was in fairly; good health, but of late had appeared to be. failing, and her mind' seemed to bo slightly affected.
