TIMBER-,TRADE. ! i'H Dunedln, August 5,; Tie Otago Sawmillers' Uniou of Operatives, has passed a resolution requesting the Government 'to increase the duty on all foreign and Australian timber to 6s. per 100 feet for all sizes less than 12 x 3 x 2, and to leave the present duty on all above that size; also that the Government be asked to impose an oxport duty of 4s; per 100 feet on all kauri exported. ; ■

DEATH OF A VETERAN. . Auckland,. Augnst 5. Mr. Daniel Theobold, one of the oldest residents of Auckland, died in the Veterans' Home to-day, aged eighty-seveu. : He served in the 70£h Eggiment through the Indian Mutiny and Maori Wais, 'and was _ at the taking'' of' Waitara' Pa- in Taranaki.'- He held the Indian Mutiny: medal,'the New Zea- : land medal,' the •Imperial long service,' and other medals. ' . SUICIDE. . j , (■" Napier, August s. >Martha Milgrew, .a. widow residing in White Road, committed suicide by hanging • herself, early this morning. Deceased's husband died some years ago, and she had maintained herself, by cleaning offices and .other work.
