The directors .have, therefore, acquired a block of •land.vof; about, fourteen acres in extent at Miramar;as, a..site, for ;new works. .. The land is -situated-, oloseifo'deep-watei l in Evans Bay, and is,,,M i tho.;ppiiiioii stithe Company's engineers, suitable for the purpose. .In order to enable the existing works to cope with the production of gas to an extent-needful for tlio fulfilment of the'demanifs. iuntil r n'ew works can be erected the directors have obtained an additional scrub-ber-washer,--and .other plant, which is now in course 1 of erection.
. The. .storage*, capacity of the three existing, holders is under naif a million cubic feet, or -only-about half a day's supply, and the directors have deemed it essential to obtain a new of about one and a half 'million' cubib'Teet. , THE TRADE OP SAMOA. _ Tlio ; British Consular report on the trade of bamoß for 1907 shows thnt imports amounted to ~£141,396, against i! 143,561 for 1900. and ,£144,093 for 1905. Out of last year's total ;£88,109 came from Australasia. The export trade lias, fallen off, the total for 1907 beine only against .£151,314 for 190G and ,£101,392 for 1905,. The falling-oft' has been 'principally in copra, 'the shipments of which —$400 tons—were only about half the quantity exported in 1906. This is due partly to the lower prices, and partly to the new law forbidding the ;working-up of unripe nuts with good-copra,--under penalties on both the buyer and the seller. appears to bo made in the cultivation of- cacoa and rubber, threo large rubber-plantations being now in existence in' Samrfa: " Amongst imported articles,' Australian claret and other light wines are competing favourably with Californian. . The Universal drink in Samoa,'however, is lager beer. Flour comes principally from Sydney, Now Zealand..Woollen goods find a sale in Samoa. With regard to the public finances, the report statts"tlfat as revenue fall far short of the 'expenditure, the Government has in Tiow the imposition of fresh taxation. It has
been announced in tho " Samoanisclie Zcitung" that it is intended to raise a loan of several millions of marks in 1910 for developing new roads, erecting a Custom-house, and suitable wharf accommodation, tho repayment of tlio loan to extend over twenty years.
UNCLAIMED BANK BALANCES. A bill was introduced into tho Houso of Commons in Juno to compel tho disclosure and handing over by bankers to the Department of the Public 'Trustee of tho amount of dormant balances and securities in their possession and of unpresented old bank notes issued by them. Mr. Bottomley, who fathered tho measure, said that the object of tho bill was to bring into the possession and control of tho State the vast amount of wealth which was at present lying, dormant, 'and in many Cases entirely unproductive, in the vaults and strongrooms of the various banking institutions of tho United Kingdom. The'- bill provided that on January 15 next every corporation and other persons carrying on the business of a banker should make a return in a prescribed form of all moneys in their • possession which had been lying dormant for a period of six years and upwards; also of all securities in the shape of scrip, shares, mortgages, plate, jewellory, or other valuables which had remained in their possession for, a certain period. It was also provided that these' institutions should account for all thoold bank notes and other obligations which, by reason of the effluxion of time, had bcenlost or become obsolete. There was ono joint stock bank in tho City which until a few years ago had a customer in the shapo of an eccentric old lady who had .£28,000 standing at her credit. About onco every year she drove up to tho bank, asked for the manager, drew a cheque for tho entire. .£28,000, and having become satisfied as to the security of the money returned, tho chequo, and ■ then disappeared for tho whole twelvo months. For the last seven years the bank had scon nothing of her, and, therefore, it was safe to assumo that'she had ceased to exist. "What about her* poor, dependents, who were deprived of participation in her_ money? ' There' was ono banking institution in the West End of London which admittedly had over ,£2.000,000 worth of securities of a dormant character,' and anyone who was cognisant of such affairs knew that nearly all the grand buildings which at present served as head offices of the great banking institutions had been erected at tho expense of these dormant balances. He'asked the House to give a first reading to tho bill on the understanding that it should be re-, ferred to a. select.committee, or that anyother course should be adopted with regard to it the Government thought desirable. Tho Customs revenue collected at Wellington yestorday amounted to <£3022 ss. Bd. . STOCK EXCHANGE. (BT TEtEGBArH—PEES3 ASSOCIATION.) ' • Dunedin, August i.
