Taingakawa has acted as King Mahuta's Premier for some years, and as such presided over tho great Native meeting held at Waahi last year, as well as at the meeting held recently at Waharoa and attended by tho'Governor, the_ Primo Minister (Sir J. Ward), and the Native Minister (Hon. J. Carroll). "It remains to be seen whether tha Warwick of Maori politics will now join the Arawas and others who refuso to acknowledge tho sovereignty of. the Nativf King.
A MISCHIEVOUS DEER. A FARMER'S DIFFICULTY. 1 j Auckland, August 4. The wayward, but not altogether unmi» ■ chievous, frolic of a sambur deer occupied the attention of, the Acclimatisation Society's Council this , afternoon. The'matter brought before the Council in a letter from Mr. E.- S. Smallfield, of Matahuru, who wrota as-follows: —"Can you advise me what I am to do with a buck doer which-is \running oa my farm? It chases any milch cows about, , and has been the cause of the death of two of them by chasing them into deep gullies." ' It is a different sort from the deer at Matamafca. It has short, sharp horns 8 inchcs long, and a black bushy tail. I have boon within 10'fcet of it, and I will have to destroy it if it can't be removed, as I cannot afford to lose any more cattle." Mr. Earl said that there was little doubt that it,was a sambur deer, and these wore rigorously protected by the _ Government. " Why not put his dogs on it?" asked another member. It was decided to inform Mr. Smallfield that ho had better apply to the Government for help, aj : it was beyond the powers of, the Society t« assist him, ; INDUSTRIES EXHIBITION.' .. . Auckland, August 4. The exhibition of New Zealand-made goods , ■ at the Industries Exhibition will bo opened by the Mayor. of Auckland (Mr. A. M. Myers) to-morrow morning. The exhibition will bo held in temporary buildings erected for the purpose on the sito of the new Town Hall, and promises to bo a unique display. . Auckland, August 4, The Harbour Board cabled to its Engineer, who is at present in England, stating that it would be advisable for hiih to curtail his holiday in view of the serious allegations that have been mado regarding rust in the new ferro-concreto wharves, and return to Auck-' land. In. the meantime, the Board is going to hold a full inquiry-and take evidence ou the matter.
