OBITUARY.
THE HON. HENRY FELDWICK, M.L.C,
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH. .The death' is announced at Wellington yesterday of tho . Hon. Henry Feldwick, M..L.C., aged 64. Tho deceased gentleman had been ailing for some time past. Thq Hon. Henry Feldwick was born at Norwood,' England, in 1844, and was fourteen years of ago when ho arrived with his parents' in Canterbury. He was brought up to farming by his father at Kaiap'oi. AVhilo still a young man, Mr. Feldwick became the representative, in .North Canterbury,- for'the "Lyttelton Times," and, in that way, gained his first experience in newspaper work; . Two years lat-cr, he was appointed- sub-editor of the "Timaru Herald," but, towards the end of 1871, ho again joined the staff of .ilie " Lyttelton Timos," and had charge,of the "Star" and the "Canterbury Times." In 1876, Mr! Feldwick, having acquired an interest in the' "Southland Daily Nows," removed to Invercargill. Twelvo months later, the" partnership was dissolved, Mr. Foldwick and ono of his brothors, Mr, John Feldwick," becoming solo proprietors of the old-established "southern journal. At a byelection in' 1878,' Mr. Feldwick was elected' for Invercargill. In 1879, ho was defeated, but was returned in ISBI. Mr. Feldwick was again defeated in 1884, but was successful in In 1890, ho again suffered defeat. Mr. Feldwick was called to the Legislative Council in' 1892. At tho end of his first term, in 1899, he was recalled, and, in 1906, be was appointed, for a further, term of seven years. Mr/ Feldwick h'as always taken a keen interest in all local affairs. He was, for twelvo years, Mayor of Avenal, the. borough in which, he. resided, and for three years occupied a seat on -the Southland Board of Education. _ Mr. Feldwick has been a school' commissioner for the Otago Education District; president of the Invercargill Athenaeum; vice-president of tho Southland Acclimatisation Society, etc. As : a : Frcemason, ho was the first W.M.- of Lodge St.. John, Invercargill and the first Senior Warden of tho Grand Lodge of New Zoalarid. " Mr.-Feldwick served for twentytwo'years as a volunteer, retiring in May 1903 with.the rank of colonel. In 1900, he was awarded ■ the Imperial Officers' decoration V.D. For many-years, Mr. Feldwick- took a'prominent- part in musical matters , in ' Invercargill and frequently gave his services, ils a bass singer in connection with concerts 'for charitable and other purposes. He was , married in February 1882 and has three 'grown-up daughters. ' His only son died in- Wellington. in 1906 at the age of eighteen. > ■ (BY TJtLEBBAPn.—SPECIAX.' COKBESrbNDENT.I '. He was one of the men who made the Silverstream' course at the Taieri, on which' Ladybird defeated 'Mormon in tho Champion race. Ho was uncle to tlio late Mr. A. Bird, for many years steward of the Fernhill Club, and well known in racing" circles, died this morning. i Master ton, August 3. The death is announced of Mr. James Russell, a Mastorton pioneer, at the age of eighty-three years; ■ Mr. Russoll who had resided for nearly half a century in New Zealand was ra well-known and popular figure in this town, whero ho was familiarly designated-. "Lord John Russell." At one time he' was prominent in local politics, and he also occupied tho- post of Borough Engineer for a period. Ho (leaves a widow, but no_ family, and his only direct relative in., this district is Mr.'Godfrey Russell., ; The funeral yesterday was largoly attended. ■ / Carterton, August 3. Sergeant C. H. Nicholls of tho 3rd Dragoons Guards (Prince , of Wales Own) died at his residence here last evening. Deceased was horn on December 14, 1838, at Walworth; England. He enlisted in 1853 and served with his regiment in India from 1857_ to 1864 -through the dark days'of tho Mutiny ._ •■' As sergeant ho accompanied the troops into Kolapore in 1858 with a flying column .under Sir W. Rose. He was also at the. relief of'Lucknow, returning to Eng-land-in 1864. Deceased leaves a family of four' sons apd four daughters. In later, life he followed the. occupation of tailor.
