One of the co-operative workers wh6 -went to the railway works, at, Broken River last week while the unemployed rush was on, • 1 contributes to the Christchurch "Press" this morning an article giving a graphic, account of his- experiences there. After describing his arrival at the works,, he goes on to say:— ■ By and by the last, man had been crossexamined and we were bidden to repair to the Public AVorks Department store to receivo our tools. Each man was given a pick, a long-handled shovel, qnd three sacks. The pick was lent to him by the Govern- : ment, but the cost of the shovel and the , ■sacks would be deducted from his first pay. ■An. axe could also be procured on the same terms if required. Tlio sacks were intended"! for covering stretchers for sleeping purposes. These letter were being knocked together at a furious rato, wet timber dragged in from , under the snow being used, and the completed articles being tossed out on the snow, again when finished. Men. also were busying themselves frantically in cutting up more wet timber to servo as frames for the tents.
