Through the assistance of their friends tho two murderers escaped, and a posso of sheriffs'was sent after thorn. When tho latter camo upon tho nogroes it was found that thoy, had been reinforced, and had taken up a strong position in tho hills, The negroes wero 'fajrly woll armed, and carried on a battlo with the officers for some hours. 1 Tho whites sent for moro men, and were reinforced by several hundreds, so that in the end tho negroes wero overpowered. Several of tho lattor, however, escaped.
