The Council yesterday, after hoaring why the reports of tho Higli Commissioner are not presented to Parliament, and also how tho Govornmont, in'Mr..BarrY opinion, ought to help the working man to rear a family, received tho Consolidated Statutes Compilation , Act from'tho;House. This was the signal for a series of .'speeches protesting against what the Commissioners in their report liad said t about .their secretary, Mr. Jolliffo, who is also Assistant Law Draftsman. Tho discussion, as between the Attorney-General and Mr. Rigg,' bocame, rather .heated, but tho At-torney-General agreed with most of the other apeakors as far as to. regret that tho Commissioners- had seen fit to mako such a reference to an officer of one of his Departments, whoso services ho highly appreciated. : The Houso also'.: debated this matter - early in the .afternoon, and a exhibited that Mr. Jolliffo had dono' work in connection with the consolidation that was worthy of every praise. • During the debate on tho Statutes, tho necessity for consolidating tho Native land laws was introduced by tho Opposition,' and'concedcd by the Minister. Consideration was afterwards given to tho Estimates. Almost tho ; whole of the sitting was spent over, the Industries and Comm'crco classcs. Tho Old Age Pensions class wis taken at 1.30. and tho House rose at 1.57 a.m.
