LITERARY AND DEBATING SOCIETY. A meeting of the,' Lower Hutt! Literary and Debating Society was held last night, tho Rev. Joshua Jones presiding. The subject for debate was "That it is undesirable that women should hold the franchise or be allowed to occupy li seat on municipal bodies or in tho House of Parliament." - .' Mr. Compton, in an able speech, opposed the proposal. Mr. H. A. 'Hurrell was the speaker following, and he combated . the arguments brought forward by Mr. Compton. Mr. Boss spoken in favour of the right of any woman who was fitted for a position'to take and occupy the 6ame. Mr. Ristworth also spoke,, and the Kev. Mr, Jones summed up. A vote was taken on the conclusion of the arguments, and resulted' in favour of the motion moved hy Mr. Compton. < SITE FOR GASWORKS PURCHASED. The long-talked-of scheme to provide , tho Lower Hutt with a gas supply of its own his now reached tho stage of practical politics. The Council has, for some considerable time past, ■ recognised that the supply (now derived from the Petone Borough' Council) is inadequate for the requirements of ,a progressive town. A site for a gasworks has been purchased on the Western Hutt Road (Belmont). The, area is three acres 39 perches, and is almost opposite the residence' of Mr. W. Callender. The, price is stated to be yE6SO. The necessary twelve months' notice has already been given to the Petone Borough Council of the intention' of the Hutt Council to termina'ie the agreement. The estimated cost of the installation ol the works Mill, bo between JEiflOO and <£6000. The producing plant will give 'an annual supply of 15,000,000 feot, and it is Estimated by tho engineer that the whole plant should be in working order within' twelve months from date. A railway siding has been airanged for so that the cost of cartage will' not appear as a charge on production. \ .
