Mr. Rufus Isaacs, K.C., searchingly crossexamined Joel, especially regarding an allegation that in 1902 Joel offered £10,000 to Mr. Markham, Liberal M.P. for Mansfield Division of Notts, to suppress a question in the' House of Commons relating ■to Joel's connection with the Imperial Cold Storage .Company and the Army meat contract. ' Mills, a "betting commissioner," testified that 1 he consideredthat Joel. played him a (Jirty trick in getting him to play a part In; setting' a trap for Sievier. "Dirty" Business.. Joel,' in ..cross-examination, declared that Mr. Markbam's allegation was an invention. Ho' admitted that it was a dirty piece of business on' his part to put Mills—an innocent man—into affair, but pleaded that Sievier had provoked him to discover a means of commencing a prosecution. The accused, Robert S.. Sievier, testified that when Mills said he would be able to get him a bit of money if Joel's name was excluded from the " Winning Post," be distinctly refused to /accept Joel's monoy on such terms. .. •' Accused denied that ho had ever, sent •Mills to Joel ; " the boot waa on tho other leg.'.' Sievier : said he had promised to keep Joel's namo out of the paper as a favour to Mills. ' ' ■ ' CONSPIRACY—PERJURY. (Rec.
