! There was..a" very good attendance of tho i'lneiubcrs of the Wellington Accountant Students'. Society at tho Chamber of. Commerce last'evening, Mr. D; T. Stuart, I'U.A.N.Z., presiding. The subject, for discussion was tho balance-sheet of the Government Advances to Settlers' -Department, and was .of .a most practical kind; Mr., P. Heyes, superintendent of the. Department,was present, and elucidated tho 'various points raised by the speakers. Criticism mainly centred upon tho iems in ho balance-sheet referring .to the sinking and reserve funds. Tho Department had adopted tho method of reinvesting its own sinking funds, and the propriety of this was questioned by some of the speakers. The discussion was left mainly in. tho hands of Messrs. Gold; Matthews,' Day, Harrington, and' Nelson; and at the conclusion Mr. Heyes explained the salient points of the system; of accountancy which governed the operations of his department.
