TILAK'S SENTENCE. NOT A CASE FOR THE KINC'S MF.RCY. QUESTION IN COMMONS. (by telec-iuph—mess association—copruicmT.) , (Rec. July 29, 9.15 p.m.)^ London, July 29. In tlio House of Commons Dr. Rutherford (Liberal member for Brentford division of Middlesex, who witnessed tlio Surat disturbances ip India last.year) nsked whether the Secretary for India (Lord Morley) would recommend King Edward to extend his clomoncy;to B. G., Tilak, 'in view of Tilqk's positioh.in tlio Indian National movement, and to remit .a portion'of his sentence in order to allay to • somo extent tho unrest in India. Tilak was recently sontenced to six years' transportation for writing seditious articles approving murders and tlio use- of bombs. Tho Under-Secretary for India (Mr. .T. R. Buchanan) declared that it was impossible for Lord ■ Morley to tako such action. Ho quoted Justjco Davar's remarks upon tho case,'and thought that Dr. Rutherford would agree ;tllat this was not a caso in which an exception could bo made. The Government had deliberately instituted these proceedings ill a Court of law,' and to immediately traverse tho vordict of that Court would be to stultify themselves. ; ■ The statement' was received with Opposition' cheers. .
