G., Tilak, 'in view of Tilqk's positioh.in tlio Indian National movement, and to remit .a portion'of his sentence in order to allay to • somo extent tho unrest in India. Tilak was recently sontenced to six years' transportation for writing seditious articles approving murders and tlio use- of bombs. Tho Under-Secretary for India (Mr. .T. R. Buchanan) declared that it was impossible for Lord ■ Morley to tako such action. Ho quoted Justjco Davar's remarks upon tho case,'and thought that Dr. Rutherford would agree ;tllat this was not a caso in which an exception could bo made. The Government had deliberately instituted these proceedings ill a Court of law,' and to immediately traverse tho vordict of that Court would be to stultify themselves. ; ■ The statement' was received with Opposition' cheers. .
