Tho Hon. J. A. Millar was confined to his homo yesterday, owing to a slight attack of influenza. . Captain G. S. Richardson, Chief Instructor for Artillery services, is at present in Auckland. Major J. G.. Hughes, D.5.0., will act as an : extra aide-de-eamp to his Excellency the Governor, during Fleet Week at Auckland. Mr. A. R. Barclay, M.P., returned to Wellington yesterday after a fortnight's absenco caused by tho illness, death, and funeral of his father, at Waimate, Canterbury. Mr. Richakl Gurney, of Gurncy Bros., Manners Street, returned from an extended visit to England by tlio Moeraki yesterday. Mr. Gurney was married whilst in the Old Country. Our Napier correspondent states that Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., will arrive in Napier next Saturday to relieve Mr. M'Carthy, sir., who liafe been granted threo months', leave of absence. Captain T. W. M'Donald, Assistant' Adjutant General for the Wellington Military disdistriot, has gono to Foxton in connection with tho proposal to establish n volunteer infantry corps in that district... Mr. Vassall, tho English International Rugbv player,'and-'member ■of tho touring British team, who ' missed'tho steamor at Auckland on"Monday last, loaves hero for Sydnoy by tho Maitai to-morrow. Mrs. Annie Besant, tho well-known evponcnt of theosoph.v, arrives from Aucklaiid by to-morrow night's Manawatu express. Sho will bo accompanied by Mrs. G. Johns, of Sydney, and Misses K. Browning and C. W, Christie, sectional organisers of tho Society. Mr. Geo. Portus-, of Messrs. J. and N. Tait's managerial stall', is in a privato hospital in Dunedin suffering'from, an injury to ono of his feet, which will prevent him walking for another week or two. Mr. Portus was formerly connected with tlio National Mutual Lifo Association in "Wellington."
Tlio resignation of the Bishop of Roekhrimpton (Queensland) is announced. Dr. Dawes arrived in England before Easter, and lias ever since been in the doctor's hands. Ho is slowly getting better, and thoro is good hopo of a permanent recovery, but ho is advised against 'returning to liis old and difficult life iu Queensland.
