The .address • in: His Majesty's Theatre on Sunday, night by Mr- James Thorn, of Christ 7 church, 1 on "Socialism and Laliour" was well attended. 1 Mr Hickey, of Blackball, presided, and among those present were a large number of-'the delegates ..who attended,,the recent [Trades Union Conference. : r In the courso of his remarks; : which wore punctuated by. loud'applause, the speaker condemned 1 the proposed exertion-wage system -ill; strong terms. - ' The system was,' he . said,' ; iri r bporati6n in a manufactory in Christ- - chiirch,- arid 1 it caused a, considerable amount of. unpleasantness among the;workers./ 'Only, half 'the 'ordinary rate was allowed fbr-work ; done'in eiscess bf the day's'task:'. He next ■ referred to the' development of' Socialism • within?trades' union ranks; It was his opinion ; before'ariother'three years elapsed- the trade's': 1 - union 1 organisation; would enter -the ,- field: of 'politics m'favour. of straight-out Socialism—the capture of tlio privately-owned land and machinory.
