TRAMWAY BRAKES.' THE 'INQUIRY AT AUCKLAND. Auckland, July 27. The inquiry into the condition and equipment of tho tramway brakes on the A uckland cars was continued to-day, when Mr. J. J. WaJklate, general manager, gava evidence, after which both parties summed up, Mr Walklate'for.the Company, and Mr. A. Rosser fertile Union. Tho Chairman (Mr, . • " • Holmes) intimated that the proceedings were then closed as far as Auckland was concerned, and that he proposed leaving for Wellington to-morrow to take evidence on the maintenance and upkeep of tho brakes at Wellington. A striking instance of what shipping com* Panics suffer in the broaching of'cargo was afforded at tho Magistrate's Court this morning, mien two firemen, Eugene Ross ' and John Ross, who,were arrested in Wellington, ™*e charged with stealing goods valued at -i 25 from the Tyser Company s s.s. Tomoana. Detective Hill, who conducted tho prosecution; said that pillaging had - become, a -very serious matter. 'During the past five years the Tyser Company , had had to pay £11,568 13s, 3d. m claims, of which £5110 18s. 3d. had been for pillaging alone. Mr. W. P. James, S.M., said, there was no doubt that the men, were guilty of the. off once, which was one which was very difficult to detect aud.easy to commit-. The accused had elected to be dealt-with summarily, but had they gone to the Supreme' Court they would probably have been dealt, with more severely than he was able to deal with them. They would each bo sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment, as this'class of 'offence must' bo strongly put down. ■■■•■> SCHOOL TEACHER COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. , t, ~ Dunedin, July 27.' At the Police Court to-day, Frank George Molhop, aged 23 years, teacher at Mornington School, was charged on seven, informations with indecently assaulting four girls under the agt of 16 years. Black, of the'firm of William Black, architects,' Melbourno and Capetown, who is at present in Timaru erecting a -big building for. fcho C.F.C.A.., informed a reI porter to-day that he has completed.working drawings for the > Auckland Town Hall, and is prepared to guarantee its erection for £60,000 in terms of. the competition conditions.. " Cliristchurch, July 25. i At the Court , to-day, the Timaru Brewery, was'charged with failing to supply sufficient particulars'in regard to a consignment of liquor to the Clerk of the Court at; Ashburton, a no-license district.; It .was explained that it was a .pure error, but the Magistrate (Mr. V. G. Da}') imposed a fine of, 20s. and costs. Messrs. Vincent'and Co. were similarly charged,, and;a similar- fine was' inflicted: •' ■In the case of the Crown Brewery Co., Mr. Louisson pointed-out that, owing, to a'clerical error, the return had 'been made out a3 eight dozen "half and half." Anyone knew that that meant half stout and half ale, and therefore the' breach was, only trivial. The Magistrate said that there was lio.such term recognised, by the Act, but it was a technical breach—in fact-, the most technical breach that had come before him—and lie thought ho was justified in dismissing the information. WORKERS' COMPENSATION BILL.. 4 Napier," July"26. In'the report on the Workers' _ Compensation for .Accidents Bill, the committee of the . Haiwko's Bay Employers' Association report that in their opinion the measure, besides increasing the total liability of the employer in cases of injury and death of workers, contains many openings for bringing vicious and unreasonable claims against employers, and if passed in its present form would be a cause of endless litigation. r - NEWS IN BRIEF. , Ghristchurch, .
