. (BY. TELEGRAFH—rKESS. ASSOCIATION.) ;. Auckland, July 27. ; Mr. William' Percival, formerly secretary of the Auckland Racing Club, died yesterday aged. 66. The late Mr. Percival, who came to New Zealand .in 1863, first settled in Canterbury | and- with a mare called Locomotive ho and tho late Mr. J. Pago won the first steeplechase held in the Riccartbii district. , In 1868 ho went to tho Thames district, and resided there till 1873. On. the occasion of the Duke of Edinburgh's visit to tho Dominion lie acted as secretary to theracing carnival promoted , by the Thames Jockey : Club. Iri 1873 he went to live in Auckland and joined the' Auckland Racing- Club as ■ secretary, holding office for 33 years. For quite a number of years he was handicapper for several of the smaller clubs round Auckland, and in conjunction with Mr. John Kirkwoot] he acted in a similar capacity for'tho Metropolitan Club for several meetings. ' In addition, the late Mr. Percival was-connected with the Pakuranga : Hunt Club, owned a number of racehorses, and ' frequently rodo in cross-country events himself. Ho had a small stud farm, also, Welcome -Katie and Satanolla. being two. of ...the brood marcs owned, by him. During tho-time ho was in Canterbury Mr. Percival-was a member of Sir Cracroft Wilson's Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry. . . ,
