WELLINGTON RACING CLUB. /WINTER MEETING. JULY STEEPLES WON BY LOCH FYNE. FINAL HURDLES BY LETHERIN. . CALIFORNIA SCORES AGAIN. The winter meeting of tho , Wellington Racing Club was brought to a conclusion on. Saturday afternoon, -in striking contrast to tho • first day, the weathor was beautifully' fine, and, notwithstanding tho previous night's storm; the grounds wero nice.and dry, .and the racing tract: had improved considerably as compared I ,with the first'two days. The attendance was . much larger than on either of tho previous days, and speculation on tho totalisator .was brisk: .. Th 6 returns for'tho three days, however, are not quite as largo as last year, when £52,031. was put" through tho -machine during tho meeting. With the thirteen hundred odd pounds received from tho bookmakers this year, tho Club will'miss tho, revenue on about 2000 totalisator investments. The bookmakers were busy on Saturday, but on account of tho favourites prevailing,'business would scarccly bo profitable. '
In connection with tho adjourned inquiry into the running of. Full Cry on tho first two days of,tho meeting, tho stewards of tho Club met during tho oarly hours of the racing on, Saturday afternoon, and decided to disqualify tho horso during their ploasuro. No action has so far been taken concerning tho rjders and the owner, but the inquiry will bo further continued noxt Friday evening. With tho exception of Piorre's mishap in tho Wellington .Stocplechaso on Wednesday, tho meeting had been freo from accidents until Saturday aftornoon. In . tho' July Stecplechaso Lo v ßeau came to grief at. the logs, but Cress, tho rider, was not, injured. Tho Final Hurdles was, unfortunately, responsible for two bad'.accidents. Compass fell at the second obstacle, and brought down Sen Sim and Defeat, and Exmoor fell two hurdles further on. C. Cress, rider of Sen Sim. and J. Lyford, rider of Defeat, escaped scatnlcss, but tho other two jockeys wero not as fortunate. H. Tait, on Compass, had tlireo ribs broken and sustained; slight concussion of tho' brain, and A. M'Coririon, on Exmoor, was also suffering from concussion. Both wero left at Trentham with special attention, and at latest roports woro'making satisfactory progress towards recovery.. '
Tho racing during the afternoon was of an interesting character, tho Hack Hurdles and tho July Steeplechase being responsible for two oxcellent finishes. California; scored his third success at tho'meeting by annexing tho Winter Oats, his victory being an exceedingly popular one. Tho July Steeplechase fell to Loch Fyne, who has an excellent record for the present season,, and the Final Hurdles was won by Lethbrin.
, The meeting was ably managed by Mr. A. E. Whyte and bis assistant, Mr. Griffiths, a pleasing feature about the fixture being tho strictness with which tho timctablo was ndhered to.
