/(BY TEIiEGHAPU—-rfiESS ASSOCIATI6N.) ; - A FATAL FIRE. The Bluff, July 26. - An old- respected'resident of The Bluff, named Emanuel Edmund Deer, aged about 60 years,'was burned to death last night. Deer lived •by himself in ■ a - four-roomed, house. ■: At about 11:30 p.m. a passer-by noted a . flare through tho window, and knocked■ at " tho door. Deer-replied/that .ho would'bo' out in a minute. Ho then went to give tho- . alarm, but Deer, it: is presumed, had waited' too long, and had been overcome by the ■ smoke. ' .; . Iho body was found iii .a front room where . no fire had; been during ,the-day.: .Close by fhere it was .found were -tho"remains of a purse containing a. number of - charred nqtcs and several piet'es of gold, which, no doubt, Deer had tried j to save. An- inquest will be held, to-morrow.. » ' DIED ON A STEAMER. ' ,: Auohland, July , 26. Benjamin ,-Tallents, aged 54, a steerage passenger, by the Wimmora, which arrived > from Sydney to-day, died on board at 8.30 o'clock this morning. Deceased resided at Auckland. He had been/on a visit to Sydney, and was returning with his wife. An inquest will, be held. FOUND, DEAD. : Dunedin, July 26. - An' old-age pensioner nanied Mary Aim Hollis, 73 years of age, who lived ;.by herself in Cumberland Street,was found dead yesterday. Owing to ' tho ,fact that .deceased ' had not been seen for a day or two, the police forced the entranco of her house, with . tho abovo result. ' DROWNED WHILE DUCK SHOOTING. Christchurch, July 26. Tho Little River police reported yesterday that a man named James Craw had been drowned in tho Kaituna- River the previous evening. -Craw and his •son, aged sixteen, had _ been out , shooting, ducks on the lake, and in. tho evening Craw waded out in the lake alono to , do somo more shooting, arid, getting into the riverbed, was drowned. Two constables word Bent from Christchurch this . morning -to search for the body, which was recovered shortly after their arrival. According to a telegram received from Levin by Inspector Ellison, a youth named Stanley Widows was accidentally killed at Bartholomew's Sawmill, Weraroa, at tlirco o'clock on Friday afternoon. An inquest was to Lave been held Saturday.
