THE UNEMPLOYED.

CANVASS FOR FOOD AT CHRISTCHURCH. RELIEF WORKS. • (BY TELEGEAPH—PPESS ASSOCIATION.) Christohuroh, July 24. A demonstration of tho unemployed took place to-day along several of the city streets, and a canvass was made for food on behalf of the unemployed, but there vria not a very generous response. At the Labour Department to-day twentyseven men .arranged to leave for Broken River to-morrow. Tbo Inspector of Factories desired it to be clearly stilted that no man who had applied at the Bureau had been" refused on account of any physical disability. In fact no person who had applied had been refused work. Tho City Surveyor stated that the men 011 work under the City Council were getting on very well, and were, evidently trying to' do their host. ,Ho had visited somo of the gangs and had seen them 'at work. " ■The City Council wish ■ it widely known that tho work being given by. the. Council was intended for bona lido necessitous..residents within the city boundaries. It was thought that if it became known in tho country districts that the. Council. was providing work at Bs. per day that country un-' employed would flock to' the city, -and' it is to .prevent that state of affairs that it is desired that tho widest possible' publicity should be given to the fact that tho assistance being rendered by the Council is confined to unemployed living; ; within the city boundaries.

At a special meeting of'tho' Waimaka'riri River Board to-day tho chairman was'-autho-rised to take on some of tho 'on' tho works of tho Board. Arrangements were accordingly made for sis men to be put on at Bs.- per day.
