G. Heron and J. Crossj' J.P.'s, presiding, Fredk. Jones, trainer's apprentice, who did not appear, was charged with a breach of tho railway regulations by taking a racehorse from the railway station on May 9 without paying tho consignment fee, £1 2s. 9d. Ho was fined £1 10s. and 7s. costs. Walter Garret was charged with using insulting language to the'stationmaster. Defendant denied being insulting in any way. A mistako had been mado in tho consigning, of a horse, and whan defendant interviewed • the stationmaster over the matter tlio latter, ' he said, became uncivil towards him. The ■ Bench said tho stationmaster must bo protected in the execution of his duties, and fined Garret £2 with costs lis. A woman first offender, charged with drunkenness, was fined 55., in default -24 hours' imprisonment. Anothor first offender was convicted and discharged. James M'Keo pleaded guilty to a third offence of drunkonness within six months, and also to being a habitual drunkard. Tho Boncli fined him 205., in default seven days' imprisonment. Four applications for prohibition orders against local residents wero granted. ■ Harry Earnsliaw pleaded guilty to being the owner of' a dog which attacked one Henry Lauchlan, and was fined 405.,' with costs 7s. NATIVE LAND COMMISSION. A sitting of tho Native Land Commission was held at Mastorton yesterday before Sir Robert Stout, C.J.. The position of various Nativo blocks was stated- to tho Commission, and applications were made for the approval of leases and transfors. A deputation from the Masterton legal profession waited on Sir Robert Stout after the sitting of tho Commission to ask his support to the holding of a Supromo Court sitting at Masterton. His Honour replied that a better building and a library would have to be supplied before tho. request could be granted'. Mr. W. G. Beard, who spoko for tho deputation, said these would follow in due course. Sir Robert Stout promised to give the question consideration. / OTAKI. The Catholic concert, -held in tho Town Hall on Thursday night, was a great success a. large and enthusiastic audionco attending. Misses Siegrief and O'Farrell (Wellington), were among the performers, and their singing was freely appreciated, and their efforts were warmly applauded. _ Other porformers were Mra. R. D'Atli, a singer of high merit, Misses Wallace, Quill, Lynch, and Messrs. Speak, Tahiwi, M'Bain, Faulkner, and tho Otaki orchestra. Members of the Methodist choir on Thursday night visited the local hospital, and placed before the patients a fair programmo of. vocal, and instrumental items, which, needless to say, was appreciated. FEATHERSTOJL J-lie final for the captain's trophy under tho auspices of the Golf Club was played on Thursday, Mrs. Saunders being tho winner. She scored 85, which is a record for the links.
