She should arrive in -port here:this evening/ ' ' It is reported that tho now collier Ngahoro, of about 1500 tons, which is being built for the Blackball Coal Company, will probably be: delivered next month. She is expected to leave for New Zealand in October.
The Federal-Houlder-Shire steamer Cornwall, after picking up cargo at Waitara, comos to Wellington. Sho is expected hero on Saturday, and on Tuesday is timed to lcavo for Avonmouth via Monte Video.
Mr. H. Howard, who has been second officer of the s.s.' Rotoinahana for the past month, loft the vessel in Melbourne to join the s.s. Wimmera (says an exchange), and Mr. E. M. Ward, who has been on his holiday, has resumed duty. An exchange says that Captain Hales, who has been assistant wharf manager for the Union Company at Greymouth, has been appointed chicf, vice Mr. Mason, retired. - Mr. J. Bald, lato second officer of the Kittawa, has been appointed assistant. Captain J. Benton, of the steam or Squall, has been granted a month's holiday leave. Mr. P. C. Ross, chief officer of tho Mokoia, relieves him in'command, andi Mr. H. B. Platts joined the Mokoia as chief officer at Auckland on Monday. Judging by the" remarks of those interested, the innovation of having a man to attend to the domestic wants Of the firemen and trimmers on the Maheno is giving' satisfaction (says the "Otago Daily Times"). Hitherto the men came off watch tired with the strenuous work at tho furnaces, and in littlo humour to conform to the usual domestic proprieties, such as, scrubbing and cleaning out their quarters, etc. The result was general discomfort, which only made matters worse. Now, however, an attendant is told off to look after the quarters, mess tables, meals, etc., and so far it appears that tho result has amply justified the experiment, which is now being carried out on tho Moeraki' and Maheno.
