TRAMWAY FARES.
A COMPARISON. Chrlstohurch, July 22. In regard to. a telegram from Wellington, stating that- figures -prepared by the Wellington Tramway Department sliowed tho avorago faro charged to passengers to bo 1.33 d. per milo in Wellington, tho samo in Dunediti, 2.12 d. in Christcliurch, and 1.37 d. in Auckland, tho Christcliurch "Press" is informed that the figures quoted are not the avorago per milo, but tho avorago per passenger, which is a very different thing. It is pointed out that tho figures show that not so many penny tickets are sold in Christchurch in proportion to tho higher faros as in places, which is accounted for by. the spread of population over a larger area, necessitating longer lines. Tho following table shows tho average fare por milo: —Wellington, ,70d.; Christcliurch, •90d.; Auckland, .93d.; Dunedin, l.Old. The figures ill this tablo are the cash fares rates, and from them must be taken tho discount in which Christcliurch is,, stated to •bo much more liberal than the other centres, Christchurch discounts running up to as much as jsi.;oer cent*
