Tho following resolution was passed at tho last meeting of tho Amalgamated Society of Engineers:—"That this branch respectfully draw the attention of the Right Hon. tho Premier and tho Minister for Railways to the fact that the tradesmen in tho railway Borvico are being paid at a lower rato than is . given under award of the Arbitration Court in Auckland and Dunedin, and that the recommendation of tho Conciliation Board in "Wellington is Is. sd. per hour for tradesmen! whereas Is. 3ijd. is the maximum allowed by the Railway Classification Act. We also request that provision should bo mado to pay engineering machinists at tho samo rato as competent tradesmen, tho definition of a machinist under our rules being, 'Ono who has worked machines used .in engineering shops for five yuars; and is competent to irnrk any sucii machines.'
