CONFERENCE OF SAWMILLERS. : An important Conference of representatives of tho saw-milliu'g industry'waS" opened at the Masonic Hall, Boulcott Street,' at 2:30 p.m. yesterday, Mr.' William Morris,, of Greyinouth, presiding. ■ ■' ■ ' . The proceedings of the. Conference are being taken in camera. : The opening session was devoted principally to a discussion on tho question of tho heavy" importation of Oregon pine and other foreign .milling timbers .-ana,, its offect on .local industry;- tho Conference unanimously; resolved:— . ; "That all sawmilleis present at this ■ Conference bo a deputation to interview tho Premier and tho Hon. tho Minister ~ for Customs, for tho purposo of urging tho necessity of increasing tho- import duty on Oregon pine and similar foreign-- . timber used for building purposes." : ' l : - The Conference at'6'p.m. adjourned until' nine o'clock this morning, when' further con-, sidoration will be given to the'timber, import question, and also : to matters affecting, transport of local, timber shipments. " It is! considered that further encouragement would, he given to local industry if tho'loiig distance transport rates to and from' the various shipping ports wero reduced. ' .This■'matter will also bo brought before' the' Government by the deputation. 1 The Conference wiU concludo to-day. •
