On Monday night, Mr. O'Connor, J'P., presided at a meeting in the Druids' Hall, to make '.arrangements for tlie . official opening 6f the Shannoh-Foxton bridge. | In his opening remarks,, the chairman.cominented strongly on, the: position taken up. by,the Hoiowhenua County Council in allowing ;he mat.So Jajiso. Tho arrangements for scouring tho' presence of a Minister had - boon'- left in the ,hands, of tho Council, and, when, it was found . that no Minister . was available,' they had allowed the whole business to fall through. The. Council had votad a : subsidy; for : the : opening ,of ,tho bridge, an.'. Messrs. Venn and Stephenson, councillors .for the. riding, who had been seen prior.', to iiie meeting, had. promised that, tho sum allotted would : be forthcoming if at ,all possible. Sir. , O'Connor suggested tliat, at the official opening of. tho 'bridge,. a 'farewell bo Rendered, to Sir.. John Stevens, M-.P., who had doiio so for' the district, .and who,' owing to thq redistribution. of tho electorates, would not after the , election represent tho district: ' ", ■ , \ Mr.- Stansell,.
