— BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING. j The usual fortnightly meeting of the Bur« ' ough Council was held in the Council Chambers on Monday evening. Thero were pre* scnt Councillors.Hudson (in.the chair), Mackenzie, Hall, Williams, Prouse, Levy, Douglas, Ryder, and Hankiris. Mr. • Hennessey, of Foxton, waited on the Council in connection with the proposed Harbour Board at Foxton. Ho pointed..out the many advantages such a Board would bring, not only to Foxton,:but to all the surrounding districts, and trusted that tho Council: would give every possible assistance in. helping to push tho Bill in conncction with the Board through . Parliament. All tboso pre- • sent spoko in favour of the Board, and tho following motion wa.s unanimously carried: —"That this Council affirms tho principle of the proposed Bill to constitute a Harbour Board for the port'of Foxton, and that tho. member for the Otaki .electorate be requested to. give his support to tho, said. Bill, as tho establishment of a Harbour Boavd at Foxton will be of exceptional advantago to tho ratepayers of Levin." In answer to several questions, Mr. Hennessey stated that it •would; riot bo' the • intention of tho -Board to rate for the upkeep of tho Board, but that it was hoped that wharfages, etc., would bo sufficient to do'a good deal in this way. Ona thing that seemed rather^ unfair was that the Government was at- present devoting wharfages and other profits-accruing from the' river to its local railway-expenses, and that, although it was making some profit from the rivor, it. was doing nothing'in return to improve it. - It was decided that the-Council, in conjunction with tho Horowheriua County Council, should purchase a copfof the consolidated, statutes at a cost of 12s. . : Very little;other business-was transacted before, the Council went into committee to deal'with a'matter in connection with the', gas works loan.. . v. . . The, first gathering in connection with-the ' Boxing Club took place on Monday night, and was very well attended-, about fifty people being present. Many frlbndly little bouts were indulged in, and 'tween times' songs and recitations' were'given," which altogether ; made the evening an interesting and amusing one. Councillor Levy appeared hannier when he was. informed that although thero would fco representatives from all tlio surrounding districts on tho Board, its'meetings would in all probability be held in'Foxton. Mr. J. Lane, tlii nmateur middle-weight champion of New Zealand, arrived in Levin on Saturdav. _ Mr. Lane was present at a meeting held in the evening to form a box-: ing club in Levin. - It was decided to form a club. r"id manv members wero enrolled.. Mr. Black, who is .giving up liis. position on tho Boys' Training Farm, was entertained at a, farewell dinner in Levin in evening or two ago. . Major Burlinson. tho manager of the farm/in making a small presentation to.Mr. Black, spoke in -eugolistic terms "of ; . the pood work, done by him during his connection with the institution. A rifle piatch was fired on Saturday between the Levin Rifle Club-and. the Ha'utora' ' Club; which resulted in a win for the Hautero Club by a margin of 43' points;: they scoring 554 to th» local Club's 511.' - Mr. .Tack Devino scored the" nossibjo at. 500 yards, thus winning Mr. F. 0. Smith's.'medal for the first nosiible . scored by a. member ,of the Levin Club. > The weather has been, very cold during the nights of late, and there have.been several very hard frosts.
