THE BAKERS' STRIKE.

-0 : — ■ . PROBABLE COLLAPSE. Tho bakers' striko appears, to he slowly collapsing, despite the strenuous • denials of the strikers. . When is a striko not a striko ? Tho answer must be that a striko lapses, industrially, when tho vacancies created by tho defections of the operatives aro filled, and tho stipply of the product is again at : tho normal. 1 According to Mr. H. F. Allen, secretary of the Master,'Bakors' Union, thero is now only olio vacancy in tho bakehouses of the members of his Union. On Monday there but two havo since been filled. Further, ho states that two operatives, who wont out in tho beginning of the strike, havo now returned to work, at tho award rato of wages. But according to> tho Strike Comlmttco, it would appear that tho strikers aro: still firm in thoir attitudo towards the employers, and stronger measures aro hinted at. Reinforcements to tho ranks of tho strikers, it, is said, may be gathered, from tho bakors' drivers and those who liandlo tho flour. The Drivers' Union does not appear to be altogether in sympathy with tho Trades Council s endorsement of tho striko, for at its last meeting a motion was tabled to tho effect that affiliation with tho.Council should bo cancelled. This, howevor, was lost. In other respects, the position may be said to bo in statu quo.
